### **Key Considerations Before Purchase**
1. **Check Maintenance Records**
- Ensure the engine has **regular oil changes, fuel system servicing, and turbo inspections**.
- Look for **signs of corrosion, leaks, or unusual noise** during inspection.
2. **Verify Gear Ratio Suitability**
- The **propeller shaft ratio** must match your **boat s intended use**:- **Lower ratios (1.79, 1.89)** Better for **fishing, towing, and fuel efficiency**.
- **Higher ratios (2.18, 90)** Better for **speed but may struggle with torque**.
- If unsure, **consult a marine mechanic** to ensure proper matching.
3. **Test the Engine Before Buying**
- Run the engine at **different RPMs** to check for:- **Smooth operation** (no knocking, rough idling).
- **Proper turbo response** (no excessive lag).
- **No unusual noises** (whining, rattling, or knocking).
- **Check exhaust for black smoke** (indicates rich fuel mix) or **white smoke** (possible coolant leak).
4. **Inspect Cooling & Fuel Systems**
- **Coolant should be clean, not milky (indicating oil contamination).**
- **Fuel filters should be clean**, and **fuel lines should have no leaks**.
- **Water pump and impeller** should be intact (critical for cooling).
5. **Consider Remanufacturing vs. New**
- A **remanufactured Volvo Penta SX-M** (with **full rebuild and warranty**) can be a **cost-effective alternative** to a new engine.
- **New engines** come with **full warranties** but at a higher upfront cost.
6. **Budget for Potential Upgrades**
- If the engine is **older**, consider **budgeting for:**- **Turbocharger upgrade** (for better performance).
- **Exhaust system modifications** (

This Upper Unit gear case came from a Volvo Penta SX-M 1.97 ratio out drive. Upper unit was tested on Out drive before disassembly Ran both ways, forward, reverse and neutral, turns smoothly as it should, nothing unusual noticed. U-joint/yoke and shaft good. Exact replacement for all SX Out drives stamped with 1.79, 1.89, 1.97, 2.18.
Missing the plastic Cover that has Volvo Penta SX Decal/sticker, as you can see in pictures its not there. Oil was dark brown, no water or metal shavings. Need the complete out drive or more parts. Paint is chipping off/fading falling off pretty bad on one side and the rear, below shiftier area.
