That's because OMC added a support bracket on the bottom of starter that bolted to block. I powered the starter up and it appeared to work as should, no unwanted noises. The drive assembly is complete with housing, part # 377304. That is the only difference that I can determine.

The starter was used on the early v-4s going back to 1958 v-4 50's. The drive and starter teeth look good. I am retired from the outboard repair business and selling my leftover parts, have had this many years. The starter is an AutoLite MDO-4003M, no longer available.

Specifically the length of starter changed. Used Vintage Freshwater Johnson/Evinrude starter and bending drive assembly.
